Gate of the Assumption – Puerta de la Asunción

It is located in the center of the façade “de poniente” or main, with greater proportion and solemnity than the facades that flank it.

It is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin, the subject of the tympanum and from which derives its official name, but has successively the names of Saint Mary of Consolation, of Forgiveness (New) and Real. It remained unfinished for centuries until in 1827 Cardinal Cienfuegos and Jovellanos decided to finalize it with the project of the architect Fernando de Rosales. The sculptural decoration was realized at the end of century XIX, being entrusted in 1882 to the sculptor Ricardo Bellver and Ramón, that realized in cement the current statuary.
